  • Club Alternatives

    Yes, Bangkok is infamous for its red light districtS and carousing on Khao San Road. Yes, you can spend days taking in the sereity of temples. But, if you've been to Bangkok before you might want to taste a new flavor. Hidden in plain sight, Bangkok has many hangouts that are also easy on the wallet.

  • Central World

    It's the closest that Bangkok has to an open air plaza. Right in front of Central world is a large open space with fountains, and a very active shrine. It serves as a venue for concerts, photographic displays, beer garedens, food fairs, car and motorcycle shows. At Christmas Bangkokoians peruse the cutesy Christmas display and take photos in front of the collossal tree. It's the place to be to ring in the new year. Bangkokians with a thumb on Bangkok's pulse frequently hang out there. Most of it is free or cheap. There's always something going on. If there isn't, they're setting up for something new. Go in groups--It's the kind of place that you bring your own fun.

  • Siam Discovery, MBK

    MBK sponsors several shows a year. Presently, every Wednesday around 4pm you can watch Muai Thai Kick boxing for free. When you're finished cross the street and check out the new Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, also free. Between Siam Discovery and Siam Paragon there are rotations of fairs, shows, and teenage oriented activities, like Asian Celebrity apperannces and skateboarding trick shows.

  • Erawan Shrine

    There's a free Thai traditional dance show next to Erawan Shrine. The shrine is at the side of Amarin Plaza at Ratchaprasong.

  • National Stadium

    There are actually three stadiums within National Stadium. You can swim for a 100 baht at the olympic pool at the back and run on the track for free. Kids hang out and practice their hip hop routines inside. There are sporting events, especially football at the center stadium.

  • Lumpini Park

    The Thai exercise very early in the morning. You'll see tai chi classes and people running. But the working throngs go there in the early evening for the free aerobic and dance classes. If you are travelling with kids then the park is the perfect hangout. Rent the paddle boats for only 40 baht. Just outside the gates there is an early morning vegatable market and evenings there are loads of food stalls. Don't forget to stand still during the playing of the National Anthem at 8am. and 6pm.

  • Other fun stuff

    The Dusit zoo is interesting and loads cheaper than Safari World. Check out the 4D movie at Ocean World in the basement of Siam Paragon. Fantasia Lagoon, on the rooftop of The Mall Ngam Wong Wan and Bang Kae is cheap and fun for kids and adults. If you want a real waterpark then check out Siam Park. It's a ways outside of town though.
