Suvarnabhumi

Soo~var~na~poom:The Golden Land. The name's a mouthful but you'll get used to it. The King of Thailand, HRH Bhumibol bestowed the name. Bangkok now serves as the major international hub of South East Asia. When Suvarnabhumi opened, Europe, India, China, Australia, and Africa all connect through Bangkok

recent features

  • To and from the Airport

Suvarnabhumi is located 35km from the Bangkok city center. Sounds expensive huh? What you must remember is the locals have to get to work. Suvarnabhumi can be reached by taxi, special airport express buses, local public buses, and soon by a link to the BTS/Skytrain. In general, allow 1 1/2 hours for travel to and from the airport.

  • Getting there by taxi

Certainly the easiest and cost effective if two or more are traveling. A normal trip to the airport by metered taxi, depending on time of day, should be between 200 and 300 baht, Really worth the savings in headache. The trick is knowing when. Rush hour on a Friday expect a 3 hour delay which could result in a 600-800 baht fare range. Too early in the morning (before 5 am) and taxi drivers will want a flat fee. Before am. rush hour is the cheapest and fastest time. 45 minutes and 200 baht (+ tolls) is all you need.

  • Getting there by tuk-tuk

NOT! They aren't allowed even if you convinced a driver to go. Interestingly but not something recommended by WIB, you could take a tuk-tuk to the bus depot near Suvarnabhumi and then take the free airport shuttle to the airport. But, tuk-tuks can't get on the expressway, taking the side streets all the way there, well...do you want to miss your flight?

  • Getting there by Airport Express

It's the price--150 baht per person. (add 50 baht and you can take a taxi) It's the time--2 hours on average. (AE buses seem to lumber painfully down the street) It's the infrequency and unpredictablilty. IT'S JUST NOT THE RIGHT CHOICE. There are 4 bus lines that seem convenient but tend to drop you a good distance from hotel areas. If you just have one bag or a backpack then it's ok to take it FROM the airport, especially if you are headed straight to Khao San Rd.

  • Getting there by Public Bus

On a budget, it's the best option. During light traffic it makes good time about 45 minutes to an hour. Take a local bus to the airport bus terminal, then swtich to the free airport shuttle, also Return!! From Victory Monument, take the 551. Fron On nut, take the 550. From the southern bus terminal passing by Democracy Monument, take the 556. There are other buses that go to the airport, consult a bus map. Returning is easy. At the airport bus terminal, there are signs in English for all the buses and their major stops.

  • Getting there by Skytrain/MRT

Scheduled to open Dec. 6, 2009. (but expect a delay) The new high speed rail line that interchanges at the Phaya Thai BTS Station and Petchaburi MRT Station, stops in Makkasan and follows the expressway, is in the final stages of testing. The express service will take just 15 minutes but the price...150 baht. This is a great leap forward for Bangkok and we at WIB hope that it will be successful and...that the price will come down.
